José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, widely recognized as a national hero, played a significant role as a Filipino nationalist, writer, and polymath during the twilight of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Born on June 19, 1861, he emerged as a pivotal figure in the Filipino Propaganda Movement, advocating for political reforms within the Spanish colonial system. While he refrained from direct involvement in the armed conflicts of the Katipunan, Rizal's writings catalyzed the Philippine Revolution, leading to his execution by Spanish colonial authorities on charges of rebellion. His literary masterpieces, including "Noli Me Tángere" (1887) and "El filibusterismo" (1891), not only illuminated the societal conditions of his era but also inspired many, solidifying his status as one of the foremost heroes of the Philippines. In his pursuit of peaceful reform, Rizal founded La Liga Filipina, aiming to unite the archipelago and promote equality, education, agriculture, commerce, and reforms. However, the Spanish authorities perceived the organization as a threat, resulting in Rizal's arrest, deportation to Dapitan, and the temporary inactivity of La Liga Filipina. Faced with the looming revolution, Rizal chose personal sacrifice over armed uprising, asserting that peaceful resistance was the best approach to alleviate suffering and prevent further loss of Filipino lives. Despite being implicated in the revolution, he refused opportunities to flee. Tried and convicted of rebellion, sedition, and conspiracy, Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896, his final words echoing those of Jesus Christ. His clandestine burial and the poem "Mi último adiós" underscored his enduring legacy of sacrifice and patriotism, influencing subsequent political movements in the Philippines.
