Developed as part of SNRI's 'Formula Project', the F91 was created to surpass the limitations of contemporary MS and address industry issues such as size and cost. Through this development program, which aimed to improve upon Anaheim Electronics' monopoly on the MS industry, the F91 reached the 'performance limit tidemark' of present day MS. Designated only by its model number, the F91 was later referred to as "Gundam F91" by Space Ark captain Leahlee Edaberry due to its resemblance to the iconic Gundam.
